So we are moving back home after years of living in San Antonio. Wife’s family really needs her closer and a opportunity with my company came up out there same pay but different division. Sadly that means my unnecessary car shopping cannot bear fruit until after we settle on the new house. At least they are paying to move us there.  But in the meantime what did my wanton searching yield? Nothing other than the most unicorn of modern Toyota tacomas a 4x4 MANUAL off road!! And it was blue the best color for all cars ! I could have gotten them down to a pretty good price but sadly it wasn’t meant to be I guess because now it’s gone off their website. Not like I could have made the plunge though with the move/job business but still Darn you homebuyer credit requirements. A picture of the blue maiden for your trouble

Where are you moving to? If you’re moving to teh northeast or anywhere they have winter, snow, and salt, then buy a car in Texas *before* you move, so that you won’t have any rust.

And when you do bring the Texas car up north, spray it with Krown annually. There are a few shops in New E ngland, PA, Upstate NY, and the Midwest that will apply the full Krown treatment for about $100 or so.

I know the feels, I’ve moved three times in the past five years, it really sucks and I refuse to do it again unless circumstances totally beyond my control dictate. Maybe not even then.

Thankfully we are just moving back West to Midland still in Texas so it will be even drier than it is here in south TX

We have friends that are moved by their company every few years, usually just after they finish getting the house they bought just the way they want it.

They just got settled in Cape Town. No job is worth all that.

I may have to broaden my search then because nice low mileage OR’s are easy to find but manuals regardless of what trim they are are not at least with my current findings

Yeah I’d say that is probably not worth any price hopefully things go smoothly for them. I hope this is the last time I have to do this but doubt it

Are you set on a 3rd Gen? Because the 2nd Gen is 98% the same truck..

That can backfire- we bought a car in Austin, drove it to Maryland, and upon registering it, found that it had previously  been registered in...... you guessed it, Maryland. Still good advice though.

To be honest no not really because the prices for all of them out here are ridiculous enough regardless or year thanks to the Toyota tax that I may as well spend a bit more for newer and lower mileage examples.

We had a 2005 for the last 5 years and then went to a 2017 last fall. S a m e t h i n g , finding one under 5 years old was about the same cost as brand new..

That’s almost exactly my truck. I was going to buy that beautiful blue, but my wife preferred Cement gray (I’m happy I went that way - it’s an awesome color, I haven’t seen any others around town, and it makes more sense on a truck. I would’ve gone crazy trying to keep that blue pristine, but it sure is pretty). Had to special order mine.

Sounds like it’s a lifestyle choice your friends have decided is worth it for them? I have friends who grew up all over the world and loved the experience. My family to an extent did the same – but tried to stay put for most of my/brother’s schooling years. My parents worked internationally a lot before we were born/after we became teenagers though. It certainly helped with some of the perks though as far as paying for housing, vehicles, living costs, kids’ education etc. goes – pretty much paid for most of my college costs and REALLY helped set my parents up really well for retirement.

Certainly not for everyone – and probably not for my family either. We have a pipe dream that it’d be cool to maybe spend a few years on assignment in Europe, but not something we’d do over and over again. But for those who do – I guess they’re just wired differently and find it to be a good life experience, and the compensation/perks can make it quite rewarding.

Oil patch? I worked for Apache for ~10 years, but only ever spent a few days in Midland.

I’m sure it is. Years ago, when they were just starting, they felt jerked around by his company when they had to do as told.  That was back when they had thoughts of starting a family and her getting a stable teaching job.  But, now I’m certain he is senior enough in the company that he could choose.  They’ve just made the change in their lives to embrace the adventure.

Insurance actually. Moving over from our specialty group which handles play toys like motorcycles and RV’s to the commercial side so I'm sure that my days will be full of trucks and trailers. Excited though as it's another new product to learn about. And doing what I was was getting old honestly
